Cedar Roofing, Remove or Cover OverBy Michael Del Greco, Licensed Home Inspector When roofing replacement is performed sound construction practice and the local building department may require removal of all the existing asphalt and cedar roof coverings. New sheathing (additional expense) and roof covering will then be required to be installed. Although many contractors will install horse feathers to level out the cedar prior to installing new asphalt shingles I find the result to be a poor quality installation that is prone to premature failure as the nails securing the shingles and horse feathers do not hold as well as nails driven into real plywood sheathing. In climates where snow occurs make sure a weather and ice shield is properly installed under new roofing. Properly installed means according to the manufactures instructions, not how ever the hell the contractor feels like installing it. Prior to roofing replacement go the the roofing manufactures web site, print out the installation instructions and have the contractor sign off on them as part of the installation contract. In that way if an installation is not performed in conformance with the manufacturers instructions your court case can be strengthened.
